An announcement concerning a “comprehensive fitness and wellness center” involving Sanford Health-MeritCare and the YMCA at Urban Plains Center is expected early next week.
Both MeritCare and the Fargo-Moorhead YMCA plan a news conference Tuesday to discuss plans for the athletic center at Urban Plains Center, a hockey arena that hosts the Fargo Force.
Darren Huber, a MeritCare spokesman, said Tuesday that he could not disclose details, except that a “comprehensive fitness and wellness center” at Urban Plains is planned.
Similarly, Kristan Dullinger, marketing director at Fargo-Moorhead YMCA, said the organization is working with MeritCare on a new facility, but otherwise declined comment. Paul Finstad, the Y’s executive director, said the announcement will be made Tuesday.
Lance Johnson, Urban Plains Center general manager, said he couldn’t comment on anything regarding the fitness center. He said he might be able to comment after a board meeting today, but wasn’t certain.
The possibility of an alliance between Sanford Health-MeritCare and the YMCA concerning an athletic training facility at Urban Plains Center first surfaced publicly in March.
It is not clear whether the plans call for adding ice sheets at Urban Plains.
Jim Larson, director of finance and human resources for the Fargo Park District, said the parks are not involved in the fitness and wellness center at Urban Plains.
