A letter from Thomas A. Mayer of Bismarck is typical of a lot of the partisan attacks we see these days (Forum, June 12). While he beats his chest about how great things are in North Dakota, he might also want to check to find out that one- fourth of the North Dakota gross domestic product comes from federal funding. Yes, that’s the farm program, roads, military, water projects, and much more.
Maybe Mayer should suggest that all of that be shut down, and then I wonder what kind of economy would exist in North Dakota.
I have also often wondered why the Republicans haven’t said what they would do if they were handed the mess that President Barack Obama received from the Bush administration. They criticize much but don’t seem to have any ideas.
There are many who are responsible for the federal deficit. President George W. Bush started creating it when he squandered the surplus from the Clinton administration by giving it to the wealthiest citizens. Then Bush took us to war in Iraq on false pretenses.
The state does need some help with managing its affairs. We are fortunate that we have oil and coal or we would be having the same budget problems as other states. Coal and oil won’t be here forever.
Why aren’t we thinking about what we are leaving for our children and grandchildren? We need another senator like Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., who will step up and do the right things.
