First-ever festival extols exotic combo
Lobster and lefse go together like, well, who really knows? Crowds are sure to find out this weekend at the first-ever Lobster and Lefse Festival being held Friday and Saturday at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo.

Lobster and lefse go together like, well, who really knows? Crowds are sure to find out this weekend at the first-ever Lobster and Lefse Festival being held Friday and Saturday at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo.

“As exotic as lobster is to North Dakotans, lefse is exotic to the rest of the world,” reads information by the event’s organizers.

The culinary celebration in-cludes a Games Galore activity area and concerts both days, as well as scores of seafood and traditional ballpark fare from the RedHawks vendors.

A meal of fresh Maine lobster or beer-battered shrimp, corn on the cob and lefse costs $20, while individual items range from $3 to $15.

Friday and Saturday feature concerts from Dave Herzog’s Island Steel Drums from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pucker Up will also play at 7 p.m. and Killer Spin at 9 p.m. on Friday. Saturday brings Billy D and the Crystals at 7 p.m.

The event, coordinated by the Fargo-Moorhead AM Rotary Club, will raise money for the Rape and Abuse Crisis Center of Fargo-Moorhead and the YWCA Cass Clay.

Admission is free each day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., otherwise $3 for adults and free for kids under age 12.

Other events around the region this week include:

  • Midwest Waterfowl Fest, Scheels All Sports parking lot, Fargo, Friday from 3 to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The seventh annual event sponsored by Scheels and Fargo Parks includes dog jumping, duck and goose calling contests and guest speakers and seminars for all ages. The North Dakota State Duck Calling Championship will also be held at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday.

  • Looney Daze, Vergas, Minn., Thursday through Sunday. The celebration begins with a pageant on Thursday and continues with kid and adult karaoke on Friday, as well as city-wide rummage and sidewalk sales. Saturday includes a 5K run/walk, a craft fair, inflatable games, loon calling and a street dance. The weekend ends with a collectible car show from 9 a.m. to noon and a parade at 2 p.m. on Sunday, followed by water fights and turtle races.

  • Art of the Lakes “Arts and Crafts Affair,” Battle Lake, Minn., Saturday.

  • BBQ Cook Off, Rutland, N.D., Saturday. Judging for the cook-off begins at 6 p.m., followed by karaoke and a street dance.

  • Evening in the Park and Pets in the Park, Oakes, N.D., Tuesday, 6 to 7 p.m. The evening includes a rib cook-off, picnic and the 29th annual “Pets in the Park” pet show.
