Bernice Kurtz, 89, died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on August 22,2010, after a brief and gallant battle with cancer.
Bernice was born on September 27,1920 to Harold and Beulah Scott in Walhalla, NO. She was one of five children, all who have preceded her in death. Bernice graduated from Walhalla High School and then went on to attend Union College in Lincoln, NE. She later attended Mayville State College where she received her teaching certificate. Bernice taught in the Pembina school district for a few years. On June 6th, 1944 Bernice married Harold Kurtz of Lucca, ND. Harold and Bernice farmed for many years in the Lucca and Enderlin area. Although not raised a farm girl, Bernice adapted well to farming and was very dedicated and devoted to farm life. In 1957, Harold and Bernice moved to Leonard, ND where they farmed until their retirement in 1991. Bernice was an avid gardener and was very proud of her large raspberry patch. She freely shared her wonderful garden produce with friends and neighbors.
Bernice had a very strong faith and was a long time member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
Bernice is survived by her husband of 66 years, Harold Kurtz; one son, Lynden Kurtz (Glenda) of Horace, ND; two grandchildren, Kristin Erb (Timothy) of Maple Grove, MN; Ryan Kurtz (Roxanne) of West Fargo, ND; and three greatgrandchildren, Riley and Gabby Kurtz and Aubrey Erb. Bernice deeply loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren. They were the joy of her life.
Bernice’s family wishes to thank Hospice of the Red River Valley and the Pioneer House of Fargo for their kind and loving care. It was greatly appreciated. Donations in memoriam may be given to Hospice of the Red River Valley.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: Thursday, August 26,2010, at 2:00 pm, in the Fargo Seventh-day Adventist Church, 5718 36th St. S., Fargo, ND.
