MOORHEAD - Even as work races ahead on the Bill and Adair Grommesh family’s “Extreme Makeover” house in south Moorhead, their former home is quietly nearing completion for use by another family.
About 15 volunteers were working about noon today on the home at 1928 8th Ave. N. in Moorhead.
As a skid-steer loader smoothed black dirt for the back lawn, workers with Pro Landscapers and students from North Dakota State University’s landscape architecture program placed about 25 plants and shrubs around the home.
NDSU students Shawn Kummet and Zach Swanson were taking a moment to look at plant placement from the curb.
“We’re just trying to make everything look nice; make a good first impression, Kummet said.
“This is a great opportunity” to practice skills learned in school, Swanson said. “And feel good about it.”
The home’s interior is painted throughout and new appliances have been installed. Carpets will be replaced and it will be given a thorough cleaning.
Volunteers painting the kitchen said they know the Grommeshes and their children, Garrett and Peighton, from when they attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Moorhead.
“It’s just awesome that we know that family. It’s just kind of fun to give back,” said Bobbi Mercil of Moorhead.
Outside, sod needs to be laid and a coat of paint put on the siding, but otherwise it looks good.
Jason Thompson, a carpenter from Dakota Construction said he was finishing up minor details such as hanging doors, trimming windows and putting in garage steps.
“We’re just doing whatever needs to be done,” he said.
Representatives of Heritage Homes of Fargo, the lead builder for this “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” project, say they’ll discuss plans for the northside home soon.
