This year’s student-led Fill The Dome drive aims to collect 110 tons of food and $110,000 to fill the area’s food pantries, organizers said Tuesday during the campaign’s kick-off at Fargo’s Great Plains Food Bank.
“I believe that the community is up to the challenge,” said Joe Burgum, a Fill The Dome spokesman and senior at Fargo Oak Grove High School.
“The goal grows not just because we want to reach new heights, it’s because the need is still there,” he said.
Last year’s drive brought in 101 tons of food and $110,000 in total donations, the group’s website states.
This year will again feature a competition among schools to see who can bring in the most food. The competition is divided into three classes: high schools, middle schools and elementaries. The winners get to make a donation to the charity of their choice.
Information on the group is also available on Facebook and Twitter, and they have a YouTube video, Burgum said.
The drive is led by high school students from Oak Grove; Fargo North, South and Davies; West Fargo; Moorhead; and Northern Cass, Burgum said.
According to the Fill The Dome website, the food will be given to about 230 food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters and other feeding programs in 85 communities.
Food donations can be made at local schools, brought to the Fargodome Nov. 22, or dropped off at Slumberland stores in West Fargo or Dilworth, and at Gate City Bank locations in Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo.
Hornbacher’s stores will sell $10 bags of food for the drive Nov. 15-21. The stores will also accept food dropped off for the event, Burgum said.
