We have a marvelous school district. Unfortunately, the state of Minnesota is not funding our local district at a rate that supports our high standard of excellence. We cannot wait for the state to recover its financial base before we take action, so we will need to help ourselves.
We can do this. We have a history of self-help – from our ancestors who recognized the importance of education and raised our first schools to our teamwork in filling sandbags to protect our infrastructure. Valuable endeavors take effort, teamwork and a few blisters and sore backs.
Our children and our neighbors’ children should have the best possible education that we can provide. When I see our neighbor kids skip onto the school bus in the morning (we are empty nesters), I want to know that they are heading toward schools and classrooms that are more than meeting their most basic needs. I want them to experience quality education – as an elderly person characterized it: “all that they can stand.” We can help with that – shoulder to shoulder.
