FARGO – Police here say a scam victim was going to wire $500 to a person claiming to be from the Las Vegas Gaming Commission before the wire transfer company stepped in and called police, who talked him out of it.

The scammer had contacted the victim by phone and asked for money, Sgt. Mark Lykken said.

The victim refused to cooperate with the police investigation, but after speaking with police, he decided not to send the money, Lykken said.

The victim claimed to be out several thousand dollars from a scam last summer in which the suspect lied and told him that he had won a multimillion-dollar prize, Lykken said.

Lykken reminded residents to use extreme caution when contacted by companies asking for money to be sent via money orders.
