Sanford Health announced Wednesday that it plans a new clinic on a sprawling site near southeast Moorhead’s Horizon Shores subdivision.

The new clinic, which doesn’t yet have an estimated cost or opening date, will be located on almost 25 acres near the interchange of Interstate 94 and 34th Street.

“The clinic will be uniquely Moorhead in terms of scale and design and will offer an architectural gateway to the community from the east,” Dr. Bruce Pitts, president of Sanford Clinic, said in a statement.

The location is at the convergence of six major roadways in Clay County. As plans continue to take shape for the project, expected to be completed in several years, Sanford is evaluating whether to keep its current Moorhead clinic at 1301 8th St. S.

“It’s in review,” Sanford spokesman Darren Huber said. “We’re talking to folks in the neighborhoods, patients, the universities.”

The current clinic, which is 16,700 square feet, is located near the campuses of Concordia College and Minnesota State University Moorhead. It has 26,000 patient visits a year and more than 40 employees.

Sanford, which opened its first clinic in Moorhead in 1985, also has a pharmacy and FastTrack location in the city.

The site in southeast Moorhead was chosen because it is in the fastest-growing part of town, with continued growth forecast.

Sanford also is studying a new medical center, targeted for completion in 2016, in southwest Fargo’s Agassiz Crossing development.
