Sanford ranks third among philanthropists

Sanford donated $162.5 million last year, with the Sanford Health Foundation the biggest beneficiary. He gave $100 million to establish a national institute devoted to research and treatment of breast cancer.
Sanford, 75, also gave $50 million to bolster research programs at the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif., Orlando, Fla., and Santa Barbara, Calif.
George Soros of New York City, who gave $332 million, was ranked No. 1, followed by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who gave $279.2 million.
