Sanford ranks third among philanthropists
Denny Sanford, the primary benefactor of namesake Sanford Health, was rated No. 3 among top major givers during 2010 in a ranking by The Chronicle of Philanthropy.

Denny Sanford, the primary benefactor of namesake Sanford Health, was rated No. 3 among top major givers during 2010 in a ranking by The Chronicle of Philanthropy.
Sanford donated $162.5 million last year, with the Sanford Health Foundation the biggest beneficiary. He gave $100 million to establish a national institute devoted to research and treatment of breast cancer.
Sanford, 75, also gave $50 million to bolster research programs at the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif., Orlando, Fla., and Santa Barbara, Calif.
George Soros of New York City, who gave $332 million, was ranked No. 1, followed by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who gave $279.2 million.
