FARGO – The Red River here is now predicted to crest at 39.5 feet by Sunday evening and fluctuate at around 39 feet through Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service indicated this afternoon in a revised forecast.

However, given the chance for rain on Sunday, the crest could go as high as 41 feet around Sunday or Monday, the weather service said.

The most recent forecast for river levels includes expected precipitation through Sunday. But the predicted crest could change if any additional precipitation falls, the weather service said.

A potentially significant storm system could affect the Red River Valley on Sunday, the weather service indicated.

A river level of 39.5 feet would surpass the third-highest Red River crest on record, which was set in 1897 at a level of 39.18 feet.

The highest flood on record was in 2009, when the Red reached 40.84 feet.
