FARGO – Phoenix International, a John Deere company, is breaking ground today on a 90,000-square-foot building at 4101 19th Ave. N. in Fargo.
The $22 million project is an expansion of Phoenix International’s presence in the Fargo area, where the company already has five facilities.
Phoenix International is an anchor tenant of the North Dakota State University Research and Technology Park, and it has a manufacturing plant in West Fargo.
The company designs and builds electronic control, display and sensor systems for equipment manufacturers, including John Deere.
The new building will provide space for product design and an expanding engineering staff. Part of the space will be used to test new designs.
The building will also provide space for the manufacture of electronic controls and other parts for John Deere’s new hybrid construction vehicles.
“This expansion will support the continuing growth of Phoenix International here in the Fargo area,” said Tom Budan, the company’s president.
“Our growth is possible in part,” he added, “because of the regionwide cooperation we’ve received from the city of Fargo and the state of North Dakota.”
North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple is expected to be among the dignitaries attending today’s groundbreaking.
“This expansion not only represents additional jobs and opportunities for Phoenix International and our state, but it reflects our positive business climate and the growth and development that are continuing to set North Dakota apart from the rest of the nation,” Dalrymple said in a written statement.
Phoenix currently employs about 900 people in the area, and the company says new job numbers will depend on product demand.
“Their economic impact on the community is already substantial and adding to that is certainly a great thing for us,” said Kevin McKinnon, president of the Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corp.
The new building is expected to be completed by November 2012.
