MOORHEAD – Jay and Cheri Anderson both have more than 25 years of experience in the restaurant business, but their new bakery shop, Cheri’s Sweet Creations, is the first business they could call their own.

Cheri Anderson said she knows starting a business means taking a large risk, but she said it was time.

“I’ve just always loved baking, and people have told both Jay and I that I should just start selling this stuff,” she said, taking a break outside the shop located in the Moorhead Center Mall.

Right now the shop relies on mall traffic, but the couple say expanding their delivery business is a major priority.

“We take large orders,” Cheri Anderson said.

The shop’s specialties include chocolate cookies and sub sandwiches made with fresh-baked bread.

“We get a lot of compliments on that bread,” she said.

“And the salads,” she added. “We get a lot of compliments on the lettuce. It’s a crisp, romaine/iceberg blend.”

The shop opened in October, and the menu is still being tweaked.

“We’re working on a soup and sandwich combo for the lunch hour. It’s the season for soup,” Jay Anderson said.

All of the baking is done in a little kitchen in the back of the shop.

“We do a lot of prep work the day before, so all we do is raise it and bake it the next day,” Cheri Anderson said, adding that the holiday season has been good for business.

“We’ve had quite a few mall employers ask us for big orders for Christmas parties,” she said.

The Andersons are their own bosses and their only employees.

But they do get help.

“We have family members that volunteer,” Cheri Anderson said.
