Makeup: Easy does it

A swipe of lipstick can boost your confidence, but too much makeup may undermine other people’s trust in you, a recent study shows. Researchers photographed the faces of 25 women four ways: bare-faced, and with natural-, professional- and glamorous-looking makeup. Two groups then viewed the images either for fractions of a second or for an unlimited amount of time. Both groups rated women wearing more makeup as appearing more competent and attractive. But the long-view panel also perceived the most “done up,” glam women as significantly less trustworthy than those who were less made-up or bare-faced, while they judged the natural-look women to be especially trustworthy.

Recalls Alert

The following products and vehicles were recalled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Unless otherwise indicated, discontinue use of the products immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a refund. For more information about the products, call the manufacturer or CPSC’s toll-free hotline, 800-638-2772. Only some cars or trucks recalled are affected. Contact a dealer for your model to see if it is included in the recall. The dealer will tell you what to do.

PRODUCT/VEHICLE PROBLEM

Child Bicycle Trailers and Conversion Kits, sold by Thule Child Transport Systems Ltd. at specialty bicycle stores nationwide and on various websites from December 2005 through August 2010 for between $400 and $925 for Chariot bicycle trailers and from October 2002 through August 2011 for between $40 and $70 for bicycle trailer conversion kits.

Chariot Carriers convert to strollers, jogging strollers and bike, hike or ski trailers. Recalled conversion kits have hitch arms that attach the carrier to the bicycle with model number “20100503” printed on a label attached to the aluminum tube next to the warning label. Older conversion kits without a label, but with a release push button located where the hitch arm inserts into the carrier, are also being recalled. The issue with this product is that the bicycle trailer’s hitch mechanisms can crack and break, causing the trailer to detach from the bicycle. This poses an injury hazard to children in the bicycle trailer. Consumers should stop using the recalled bicycle trailers and bicycle trailer conversion kits and contact Chariot Carriers for a free repair kit, which the consumer can install.

Mini Cooper 2007-2011 BMW is recalling certain model years of the Mini Cooper S, because the electric auxiliary water pump that cools the turbocharger has an electronic circuit board that can malfunction and overheat, which can lead to vehicle fires. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the water pump for free. The recall is expected to begin during February 2012.
