NEW YORK CITY – Marilyn Hagerty came full-circle on the second day of her tour of New York City restaurants: She stopped at Olive Garden.
The 85-year-old grandma’s review of Grand Forks’ Olive Garden in the Herald is what brought her here after it charmed the socks off the Internet. As of 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night, the original review online has had 979,000 views.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, the Herald sent the living Internet meme to what arguably is the nation’s gastronomic capital.
Marilyn started Day 2 with some interviews followed by shooting with the crew of CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360.” She told a Herald staff member she hopes she remembers which is his first and which is his last name.
After the shoot ended around 2:30 p.m., she went back to the hotel to write one of her five weekly columns.
This one’s a review of Dovetail, a New York City restaurant with one star from the Michelin Guide, which is pretty sharp because the guide doesn’t review all restaurants, let alone assign a star.
Marilyn says in the column, which will run later in the week, that she enjoyed herself. On the other hand, as is her custom, she checked the restroom and noted that it was difficult for some to navigate.
She also speaks well of the hot dog stand in front of the New York Times building.
Her column done around 5:40 p.m., she headed to dinner. But not at Olive Garden.
Ryan Babb, her personal assistant for this trip, confessed that they only took pictures there. “Too many other unique things to eat,” he said by email.
Marilyn was actually in the mood for some Shake Shack, according to Babb’s Twitter account. It’s a New York City burger-and-shake chain that touts fine ingredients and great service. The New York Times gave it a star.
There was a line at the one in Times Square, and Marilyn thought that meant it would be good, Babb tweeted. Inside, she said that it was like “well-organized zoo.”
After dinner, Marilyn took a stroll and “braved the Times Square smut peddlers like a true vet,” he tweeted.
Then it was back to the hotel for some writing. More columns await.
