Mathison: Create your own summer bucket list

I love the days of early summer, full of promise and possibility. Yet I often lament late August back to school days, looking back on three months of too much work and not enough fun.

I love the days of early summer, full of promise and possibility. Yet I often lament late August back to school days, looking back on three months of too much work and not enough fun.

It’s not that I don’t enjoy my work, but I need to build in a more time for my 4-year-old son Grant and my own inner child.

So I decided to make a bucket list of what I’d like to do this summer, and I’m calling it a summer manifesto. To me it sounds a bit bold, and a lot more fun than making a list of New Year’s resolutions.

Summer is a time for play, adventure and new, exciting energy blended with some rest and relaxation. By making a conscious effort and writing it down, I hope to keep more promises to myself.

  1. Smell the roses and pick more flowers. I have completely missed my lilies of the valley for many years. This year I made it out to the backyard to inhale their beautiful scent, but never got back out to pick a tiny bouquet for my office. My peonies are in full bloom, and I will share an armful with my colleagues.

  2. Get a massage a once month. There is nothing like outsourcing relaxation.

  3. Get a pedicure once a month. Looking down at pretty toes in the perfect shade of aqua blue-green and soft feet makes me feel great. And of course the massage part of the service is well loved. Every man should try a pedicure – I’ll bet they’d get hooked, too.

  4. Get outside for at least 30 minutes a day, unless there’s lightening.

  5. Rediscover Fargo parks through the eyes of my child. We’ve been to the “Blue Park” and the “Yellow Park” within walking distance of our house. But he’s only been to Lindenwood once and never to my childhood favorite, Elephant Park.

  6. Learn how to use my Kindle Fire and download some books just for fun. I’ve heard from my girlfriends that “Fifty Shades of Grey” is a must.

  7. Eat lots of watermelon, corn and tomatoes.

  8. Make salsa. I have 38 tomato plants in my garden. You might want to be my friend.

  9. Invite new people over for dinner once a month. Someone told me that Fargo is a very friendly place, but after living here for almost a year, had never been invited to someone’s home for dinner. I want to engage with people beyond a superficial hello.

  10. Create an easy menu with three new recipes for the above mentioned dinner parties. I’m thinking a salad, another veggie and a fresh fruit dessert along with something on the grill – steak, chicken or salmon. My husband is an awesome grillmaster, but I will try some new things that are fun, healthy and easy to make.

  11. Do the loop at Streets Alive July 15 and August 26. My son thinks it so cool to walk in the middle of the street. “No twaffic, Mom!” I am so impressed by the healthy community spirit.

  12. Do an art project. A couple of years ago, I made butterfly collages by punching out shapes from brightly colored magazine and catalog pages. I’d like to try painting this summer.

  13. Help make TEDxFargo an amazing experience for 100+ people. The committee is a fantastic group of people to work with.

  14. Learn how to use my fancy digital SLR camera that’s been sitting unopened in its box for six months. Rialee, I need to take your class!

  15. Go camping. Every since we went to the Boat Show in 2011, Grant points out every camper and RV that we pass by.

  16. Get wet as often as possible. I read somewhere that summer is in you – just add water.

    What if you could give yourself the gift of a summer that fills your heart and makes your soul sing? Maybe you need a manifesto. Ready, set, go, Summer!
