FARGO – I have very pale skin, so on a recent trip to Florida, I was diligent about applying 70 SPF waterproof, sweatproof sunscreen every few hours.

Even so, I still managed to burn after a couple hours in the pool with my daughter on a sunny day.

To relieve the pain, I applied Water Jel’s new Unburn sunburn relief gel.

The company says the gel, which contains 2.5 percent lidocaine, pulls the heat from your skin, cools and soothes.

I didn’t have a very bad burn, but even so, the Unburn provided instant pain relief and did seem to cool as it came in contact with my skin.

It smells kind of like minty glue and has a bit of a sticky feel when first applied to the skin. While the smell lingers, it’s not overpowering and the sticky feeling goes away.

The gel also works on taking the itch out of mosquito bites. My 8-year-old daughter Caitlin had a few red welts on her skin, so we applied the Unburn and it made her feel better right away.

Unburn stopped my sunburn pain after one application. We had to apply the gel to Caitlin’s bug bites a few times before they stopped itching altogether.

Water Jel says Unburn reduces burn progression by providing controlled cooling that acts as a heat exchanger, promoting heat transfer, and decreasing heat until the burned area and gel are equal as the temperature drops.

When you burn your skin, the heat remains beneath the surface much like a turkey removed from the oven continues to cook beneath the skin, so to start the healing process, the heat from the burn must be conducted outward, according to an Unburn news release stated.

In addition to sunburns and insect bites, Unburn can also be used for minor burns and minor skin irritations on adults and children ages 2 and older.

It should not be used in large quantities over raw surfaces or blistered areas. It should also not be applied more than three to four times daily.

Unburn is available at Walmart.
