The tater tot trend has descended on Fargo-Moorhead. The crispy, plump spud nugget has made the transition from TV dinners to sit-down restaurants, proving that these taters aren’t just for tots.
More and more local restaurants are taking a page from the kids’ menu and spinning them into adult fare that’s more than just child’s play.
Tater tots, pizza rolls ($9.99 each) and cheese curds ($10.49) – Lucky 13, Fargo
Everything at Lucky’s 13 Pub is oversized, including their adult-friendly kids-inspired appetizers. And nothing is a bigger hit than the tater tots. Bacon, cheese, sour cream and chives are rolled into the potato mixture and fried crisp. The eatery also offers pepperoni and sausage-stuffed pizza rolls and cheese curds made with Ellsworth, Wisc., white cheddar.
Smores pizza ($10 for a personal, $13 for a small) – Rhombus Guys, Fargo
Just like the campfire variety, this baked pie is decked with Graham crackers crumbles, chocolate chips (plus chocolate sauce) and “marsh mellows.” Unlike the fireside snack, one piece of this pizza is more than enough. The small (eight slices) could feed a family of 10.
PB & J Burger ($7.25) – Sidestreet Grille & Pub, Fargo
The Sidestreet also partakes in the tater tot sweepstakes (add bacon and cheese for $1 a-piece), but it’s this child-like concoction is the one that jumps off the menu. Some sandwiches stick to your ribs? This burger sticks to the roof of your mouth. The peanut butter on the bottom bun is more prominent than the jelly on the top bun. Surprisingly, it works. Here’s a tip, though: Get it with bacon – the salty smokiness adds texture and helps keep the peanut butter off the roof of your mouth.
Corndog ($10) – Usher’s House, Moorhead
Usher’s isn’t the only place with a corn dog, but it is the only place with a corn dog this good. Made with Wagyu beef (similar to the well-marbled and massaged Kobe variety in Japan), this is a substantial meal on a stick. The Moorhead restaurant serves it with spicy Colman’s Mustard from England, chipotle ketchup, sweet pickle relish with a choice of sides, making it one of the most worldly corndogs you’ll find in town.
