What do pizza guys know about sake?
Plenty, according to Rhombus Guys in Fargo.
To demonstrate a variety of sake uses and pairings, Rhombus Guys staff will show not just what they know about the Japanese rice wine, but help others learn about it as well.
Rhombus Guys is hosting a Gekkeikan Sake Dinner starting at 6 p.m. Thursday.
General Manager Ian Dickmeyer said flavors of sake are not only paired with each course, but sake will be infused in the dishes themselves.
He said the idea for a sake evening came from Gekkeikan representatives who have supported similar events across the country.
“I’ve always liked fun stuff like this, and I haven’t really seen anything like it around here,” Dickmeyer said. “I thought it would be a good chance for me to learn about Sake.”
Gekkeikan is a California-based sake brewery that makes a mélange of flavors similar to an assortment of wine.
Seating for the Gekkeikan Sake Dinner is limited to 50, so participants are asked to sign up beforehand at the Rhombus Guys restaurant, 606 Main Ave., Fargo or online at rhombuspizza.com/locations/fargo.
- Nigori Arugula Salad
Bing cherries, sliced almonds, tofu and cucumber will be tossed in Nigori sake vinaigrette on a bed of arugula.
The salad will be paired with Nigori Sake.
- Spring Miso Soup
This well-known two miso Asian soup includes tofu, pickled tomato, cucumber and red onion. The soup course will be served with Black and Gold Sake, a smooth, room temperature wine.
- Sweet Plum Pork Skewers
Since pork generally lends itself to a pairing of fruity wines, the appetizer course will be paired with Japanese Plum Wine.
The plum wine can also be considered a dessert wine.
- The Ginger Emperor
As a main course, a thin and crispy Rhombus Guys pizza crust will be topped with pickled ginger sauce, rice, tofu, broccoli and carrots.
“We wanted to have a pizza in there as the main course,” Dickmeyer said. “We are a pizza place” after all.
The Emperor will be paired with Gekkeikan Horin Sake.
- Pagoda Napoleon
This Japanese-inspired layered dessert will be paired with Gekkei
