MOORHEAD – A fire at the American Crystal plant here is under investigation, Fire Chief Rich Duysen said late Tuesday night. He said no injuries had been reported.
Duysen said the fire is believed to have been started by some welding or maintenance work on an empty sugar tank on the fourth floor of one of the plant buildings. The call reporting the fire came in around 11 p.m.
He said workers should be able to return by this morning.
“I think they’d be able to get in there, the way it’s looking right now,” Duysen said. “They’d be able to get in there, clean that up and get back to work on their maintenance.”
Duysen said after the fire started, the sprinkler system went off and kept most of the fire at bay, but the flames spread to the ceiling and caught the structure on fire. A ladder truck was set up near the building to give crews access to the roof.
“We had to drag about 700 feet of hose up to the fourth floor before we could attack the fire,” he said.
Duysen said the department will conduct an investigation into the cause of the fire.
Traffic was blocked off for about two hours at 11th Street North, and smoke was visible from the street.
