ALEXANDRIA, Minn. – A Zorbaz restaurant is one step closer to opening out of the old Wharf site in north Alexandria.
At its meeting Monday night, the Alexandria City Council voted 4-1 to create a tax-increment financing district for the Zorbaz development and to approve the TIF plan for it.
Zorbaz On the Lake, a pizza and Mexican food chain based in Detroit Lakes, will completely renovate the 4,400-square-foot building, which was gutted by a fire 12 years ago. The project is expected to cost between $1.5 million and $1.7 million.
Tom Hanson, Zorbaz founder, told the city’s economic development board that the target opening of the year-round restaurant is next January or February. He said he’s purchased three additional lots for parking.
Right now, the property is valued at $136,000 and generates $2,200 in taxes.
