Tasty: Local restaurants ripe with avocados

Menus around are featuring the healthy and tasty green fruit, including an Olympic sponsorship campaign by Subway.

The avocado is a perfect power food for the summer Olympics for two reasons. First, summertime is when avocados are at their ripest and most available. Secondly, the fruit is jam-packed with nutrients anyone training for the Olympics would be wise to fit it into their dietary regimen.

For the second year in a row, Subway is offering an avocado spread for a limited time during summer.

For a 50 cent charge for a 6-inch sandwich and a $1 charge for a foot-long, diners can get a scoop of avocado for added taste and nutrition.

Subway has marketed the turkey breast, ultimate veggie and egg white and cheese sandwiches as options that particularly benefit from the “super food,” but avocado can be added as an addition to any sandwich.

Alternatively, avocado is available permanently at some other sandwich chains in town. At Jimmy Johns, for example, an avocado spread helps spice up the beach club, which has turkey, provolone cheese and cucumber and other veggies.

Sit-down restaurants like Green Mill and Perkins also offer avocado in meals. Perkins’ grilled shrimp and summer salad is a part of that restaurant’s seasonal summer breeze salad selection.

Avocado is also a long-time staple in many sushi recipes around town as well. At 101 Sushi Bar & Korean BBQ, the Alaskan Roll comes with salmon, cucumber and avocado. At Wasabi Sushi & Asian Grill, avocado comes with several specialty rolls, including the Yummy Roll topped with eel, cream cheese and avocado.

Of course, you can always get your fill of avocado from guacamole dip, too, which you can find at practically any Mexican restaurant in town. Or try the Gaucho Burger at Doolittle’s Woodfire Grill, topped with pepper jack cheese, chipotle aioli and guacamole.

However you slice it or serve it, get some avocado in your meals while it’s fresh, and you, too, can soon be eating like an Olympian.
