FARGO – When I popped open the bright-yellow bag of limited-edition Candy Corn Oreos, the overwhelming smell of the love-it-or-hate-it Halloween staple burst forth.
Candy Corn Oreos smell just like candy corn. Whether they taste just like candy corn is open for debate.
Popular culinary news source Foodbeast.com says the cookies taste like frosting, with which I won’t argue.
“There’s a slight hint of candy corn flavoring, but it’s almost indistinguishable from birthday cake frosting flavors,” the site’s review reads.
Oreo’s newest creation has returned the spotlight to the company following March’s 100th birthday celebration and June’s rainbow-colored “pride” cookie.
Since word of the Target exclusive first leaked on BuzzFeed, the vanilla wafers with orange and yellow crème filling have caused quite the stir.
They’ve been posted, shared, pinned, Tumbled, tweeted and video taste-tested. CNN’s Jeanne Moos even did a segment on what Gizmodo calls a “mutant love child of deliciousness.”
When I told a fellow reporter about the Frankencookie, he said, “That sounds kind of gross, but I’m intrigued,” which seems to be the consensus nationwide.
Case in point: The top comment on the initial BuzzFeed post reads, “Gross. Unnatural. An abomination. Where do I buy them?”
Well, the sight of the cookies is a little disturbing. The super-sugary filling resembles flattened orange and yellow Play-Doh.
Though Candy Corn Oreos have the curiosity and nostalgia factors going for them, I think I’ll stick with the original black-and-white ones.
