FARGO – The 13th annual RDO Caters Taters for Charity to benefit Special Olympics North Dakota is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Doublewood Inn.
For $6, attendees will receive a one-pound baked potato, or “pound-tato,” with the choice of toppings such as chili, broccoli and cheese, salsa, bacon bits and sour cream. A beverage and dessert are also included.
Tickets will be available at the door for both dine-in and takeout meals.
The fundraiser was established in 2000 after R.D. Offutt Co. management challenged its employees to come up with a way to give back to the community.
The company is known as one of the largest potato growers in North America.
The fundraiser has grown every year since that first year when they served 750 potatoes and raised $5,200, said Fred Hudson, director of marketing development at RDO.
Last year, 2,350 potatoes were served and more than $35,000 was raised. A crew of 130 volunteers from RDO and Special Olympics North Dakota will be prepared to serve 3,000 baked potatoes on Thursday in hopes of matching last year’s total.
Since its inception, RDO Caters Taters for Charity has raised more than $220,000 to benefit area charities such as Sanford Children’s Hospital, Hospice of the Red River Valley and the American Red Cross.
This year’s fundraiser will also include a raffle. Tickets are $10 and some of the prizes include a John Deere Snow Thrower, two airline tickets to Las Vegas, an Apple iPad and a Dell laptop.
The drawing will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the RDO offices, and winners need not be present to win.
