I remember it like it was yesterday. My preschool daughter wanted to help me make cupcakes for Thanksgiving. When I turned my back for no more than a minute, she had taken a handful of the orange buttercream frosting and spread it all over her arms and legs.
"Look Mommy! Lotion!"
Most of the time, cooking with kids isn't quite that messy. And it's definitely worth the effort.
Not only is it a great way to spend time with your kids, but it fosters creativity, teaches them about nutrition and gives them hands on experience in math concepts like fractions.
Sounds good to me! That's why I was excited when Family Wellness Cooking Instructor Danielle Irving agreed to show us a fun recipe to make with kids. (And best of all it doesn't involve orange buttercream!)
Making your own taco seasoning takes the guesswork out of what's in that packet you buy at the grocery store. You can use in all kinds of dishes and season to your heart's (or heat's) content and the kids will get a kick out of measuring all of the seasoning.
1T chili powder (more or less to turn up or down the “heat”)
¼ t garlic powder
¼ t onion powder
¼ t crushed red pepper flakes
¼ t oregano
½ t paprika
1½ t cumin
1 t sea salt
1 t black pepper
Makes @ 2Tablespoons.
Mix and store in a sealed container.
Add contents with ½ cup water to approximately 1.5 lbs prepared ground beef or chicken. Stir and Simmer several minutes.
Irving is offering a Cooking with Kids class on November 6th.
