Potter (Enget)

Kathleen Mary Potter (Enget), 72, of Marcell, Minnesota, formerly of New Hope, MN, and Fargo, ND, died on Tuesday, October 30th at Essentia St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth with her family by her side.

Kathy was born in Fargo, ND on October 5th, 1940 to parents Ivar and Rosella Enget. She graduated from Shanley High School in 1958 and NDSU with academic honors in 1962 with a bachelors degree in chemistry. Kathy was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority and was proud of her NDSU Bison heritage.

After college Kathy moved to Minneapolis to work for the US Food and Drug Administration as an analytical chemist. There she met her husband, James Robert Potter and they were married on December 26th, 1964 at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Fargo. In 1969 Kathy left the FDA to start her family with James, raising sons Christopher and Chad, and daughter Elizabeth in New Hope, MN. Kathy later worked for the Dayton-Hudson Corporation (later Macys) for over 20 years, earning employee honors and recognition for excellence in customer service.

She devoted herself to providing a warm, comfortable home for her family, where her home cooking greeted them after school, swim practice and work. Kathy enjoyed craft projects like sewing, knitting and quilt making. She was a passionate bird watcher, gardener and reader who passed on her love of books and learning to her children and grandchildren, and spent many wonderful years enjoying the beautiful northern Minnesota lake home she built with James and shared with her family and friends.

Kathy was a devoted Catholic and found strength in her faith, helping her through several serious health issues over the past few years. Despite these challenges, she remained a positive and loving mother, wife, role model, mentor and friend to her family members and friends. Always the voice of calm reason, she patiently and selflessly put others needs above her own, offering a willing ear and thoughtful advice – usually accompanied by coffee and freshly baked treats.

Kathy is survived by her husband of 48 years, James Potter; son Christopher Potter and fiancé Michelle Gunderson of Fargo, ND; son Chad Potter and wife, Christine Potter of Champlin, MN; daughter Elizabeth Potter of Rogers, MN; grandchildren Dakota, Grace and Jack Potter, many relatives and close friends, and her beloved Labrador retriever, Harry.

Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, Ivar and Rosella Enget of Fargo, ND.

Funeral is scheduled for Thursday, November 8th, 11:00 AM at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 21304 Church Avenue, Rogers, Minnesota 55374. Interment to follow at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in St. Paul, MN.
