This week on “What SheSays,” a weekly web discussion on hot topics, SheSays editor Heidi Shaffer, writer Tracy Frank and WDAY anchor Robin Huebner talk about a viral internet photo.
In the image that’s circulating Facebook, parenting blogs and Twitter, a 3-year-old girl holds a sign that reads, “I pooped in the shower and daddy had to clean it up. I hereby sign this to use in my yearbook senior year.”
Some people think the photo is humorous, comparing it to popular viral “dog-shaming” photos; others are saying it’s a cruel way of shaming a 3-year-old.
Initially, it may seem harmless, Frank says.
“The girl probably thinks it’s a big joke, but give it a few years and she could be mortified at something like that,” she says. “It does seem like it’s shaming her.”
“I think the child did something that a lot of 3-year-olds do,” Huebner says. “It was probably an accident. I don’t think a child at 3 understands shame, certainly to the degree an adult does. I don’t think that kind of visibility should be put on a very private behavior.”
Frank says she worries the child may get made fun of once she starts school if classmates remember her as “the girl in the photo.”
But Shaffer disagreed that this was something the father was doing to shame his daughter.
“I don’t think the dad had ill intent with this. I think he probably thought it was something they could share when they were older and could laugh about.”
But the father was still embarrassing her publicly, Frank says.
“We really need to work to treat kids the way we treat each other,” Frank adds.
