BISMARCK — Health officials say North Dakotans should use the "Great American Smokeout" as an opportunity to quit using tobacco.
The smokeout is being observed nationwide on Thursday. The annual event started 37 years ago.
Fargo Cass Public Health tobacco prevention educator Holly Scott says the day emphasizes the importance of not taking up the tobacco habit.
She says tobacco users often start young, and addiction usually begins before a tobacco user graduates from high school.
A recent University of North Dakota medical school study showed a 30 percent decline in in heart attacks in Grand Forks four months after the city's local smoke-free law took effect.
