Thursday review: Product protects little ears from loud noises

Increased concern about noise-induced hearing loss in children is reason enough for parents to be interested in ear-protecting products.

The fact that my son screams like crazy any time the vacuum is turned on added to my interest in Baby Banz earmuffs.

These aren’t cold-weather earmuffs. They’re ear protectors for children 6 months and older.

I tried a sample pair on 1-year-old Owen. They easily adjusted to his head, as well as his 4-year-old sister’s. They even fit my noggin.

Placing them over my ears, I was impressed at how well they muffled sound.

They’d work well on family outings boating, to a race track, air show, concert or sporting event. They may even dull the thunderous roar at the Bison Sports Arena.

At the very least, they stop Owen from screaming while my husband vacuums.

He can be a bit finicky about wearing them, but when his mood is right, he certainly doesn’t mind the earmuffs. They’re well-cushioned, and the headband is covered with leather.

They fold up compactly, and are light, weighing less than 7 ounces.

Publicity materials show shots of celebrity babies sporting them.

They’re available in blue, pink and camouflage prints and retail for $30 on Baby Banz’s U.S. website.

Baby Banz, an Australian company, was founded to produce products that protect against environmental pollutants, company literature says. The Baby Banz line also includes strap-on sunglasses, swimming goggles, SPF 50+ swimwear and Ski Banz, tinted goggles for winter sports.

Bottom line: Baby Banz earmuffs are an adjustable, comfortable option for protecting little ears from loud noises.
