Sweet of the week: Unglued takes the cupcake

FARGO – Holiday shopping can be a tiring experience that leaves you hungry for energy and a belief that all your purchasing has served some good.

Unglued, the regional craft shop, has something to fill both appetites. The Broadway store opened earlier this year selling goods by local creators, helping keep money in the community. Now they’re sweetening the deal.

The store features locally made (of course) cupcakes courtesy of Kristina Lau and Andrea Chang’s business, Bakeology.

The sweet selection changes from week to week, with a variety of flavors that reflect dietary needs. Last week’s offerings were pumpkin chip, chocolate chip cookie dough, gluten-free winterberry and gluten-free coconut.

To those of us without dietary restrictions, gluten-free baked good can raise eyebrows. The texture of the winterberry cake, which was a golden vanilla, was coarse, like a cornbread, but where it matters to most, the frosting was a cranberry butter cream and berry, berry good.

While none of the varieties tried last week were overly moist, the pumpkin was rich without being overly sweet, a nice balance considering the whipped chocolate ganache frosting.

In the past I was drawn in by a German chocolate offering, but got sticker shock from the $3 price tag. But one bite and I realized it was worth every cent and more. I’m looking forward to other premium varieties like tres leches (three milks), maple bacon, salted chocolate caramel, and lavender ginger honey.

All of which would take the sting out of shopping and give you enough of a sugar rush to finish off that crafty Christmas list.
