Delivery options fail to deliver satisfaction in first round of hot wing taste test

FARGO – The first week of The Forum’s hot wing taste test brings some intriguing matchups.

FARGO – The first week of The Forum’s hot wing taste test brings some intriguing matchups.

National chains known for their wings, like Buffalo Wild Wings and the new Quaker Steak & Lube, stack up against each other, with a few local favorites thrown in as well. Delivery wings are also put to the test to see how they compare.

Next week, we’ll reveal both the semifinalists and the champion as judged by Forum reporter John Lamb and me, so you’ll be well prepared for stocking your Super Bowl party with world-class wings.

Matchup 1: Hooters defeats Buffalo Wild Wings

This was a close matchup, pitting two chain favorites. John and I found much to like with both wings, giving high marks to meat quality, appearance and messiness.

When it came to the flavor and heat of the sauce, though, Buffalo Wild Wings fell short. From past experience, we know the chain has good wings, but in this case it wasn’t represented well by its standard buffalo flavors.

With three locations in the Fargo-Moorhead area, a visit to Buffalo Wild Wings is better served by its more creative and hotter sauces.

Hooters, which received solid all-around scores, advances by a slim margin.

Matchup 2: Quaker Steak & Lube defeats Green Mill

We were both impressed by the overall quality of the wings at Quaker Steak, the newest contender to the area. The wings from Green Mill, which we ordered via delivery, were slightly disappointing.

As with Buffalo Wild Wings, we know that Green Mill has excellent wing flavors, but standard buffalo doesn’t seem to be one.

Green Mill’s overall quality also could have been affected by delivery, which took more than an hour to arrive at The Forum after we placed the order.

In any case, the scores in this matchup weren’t close. Quaker Steak advances.

Matchup 3: The Old Broadway defeats Pizza Hut

Ordered via delivery, Pizza Hut failed to impress us with its buffalo wings. John gave low marks for meat texture, and I thought that they could have used more sauce.

Meanwhile, the wings at the Old Broadway Sports Zone, a reader favorite, came away with positive scores in all categories to advance to an easy win.

Matchup 4: Tailgators Sports Café defeats Domino’s Pizza

Domino’s, the last hope for delivery wings in the bracket, couldn’t drive home a victory. John gave their wings low marks on flavor and spiciness, and I thought the wings’ meat was not as crisp or tender as the other candidates.

Though delivery is the most convenient way to get hot wings for your party, it appears from the results of our taste test that you sacrifice quality in the process.

Tailgators, an overwhelming reader favorite, intrigued us with its unique, large wings and advanced to the next round.
