Areavoices: The 'Everyday Gourmet' fries up some homemade mozzarella sticks

It’s not that often that I fry anything in my house, but the other day I had set up a breading station for my Baked Bean and Pork Fritters, so I figured that I would keep it set up and try to make one of my son’s (and sisters) favorite restaurant treats - Fried mozzarella cheese sticks!

It’s not that often that I fry anything in my house, but the other day I had set up a breading station for my Baked Bean and Pork Fritters, so I figured that I would keep it set up and try to make one of my son’s (and sisters) favorite restaurant treats….Fried Mozzarella Cheese Sticks! My favorite part about these little bites of goodness if that I know exactly what it going into them, but an added bonus is that my son loves to help make them. Of course, not with the frying portion though….please keep children far away from the hot oil. On a lighter side note, you may also want to avoid giving a toddler an entire box of panko bread crumbs and turning your back, unless, of course, you have a furry four-legged friend that likes to clean up tasty messes! Thankfully I do!

Easy Fried Mozzarella Sticks

8 mozzarella string cheese sticks, cut in half

1/2 cup all purpose flour

1/2 cup liquid egg substitute (or about 2-3 whole, lightly beaten)

1 1/2 cups Italian flavored panko bread crumbs

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

2 cups peanut oil

Marinara sauce for dipping

Directions:

Combine breadcrumbs and Parmesan cheese in a bowl and stir until combined. In 2 separate bowls, place flour, and egg substitute. Dip each cheese stick half in flour, being sure to coat all sides, then in egg and into the bread crumb mixture, making sure that all sides are well coated. Lay cheese sticks in a single layer on baking sheet. Place in freezer for 1 hour. When ready to fry, remove the tray from the freezer and fry in 375 degree oil for 3 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from the oil using a slotted spoon. Drain on paper towel and serve with your favorite marinara sauce for dipping. Enjoy!
