GRAND FORKS - The city has opened an emergency shelter Monday in the Alerus Center for travelers stranded by Monday's blizzard after area hotels ran out of rooms.

The shelter opened at 9 p.m. for anyone who needs a place to stay for the night, according to city spokesperson Kevin Dean.

American Red Cross volunteers and city staff were preparing for at least 40 people late Monday evening. The facility has cots, showers and food available for those staying in it.

The shelter can be accessed through Door 2, located on the southwest side of the building.
