FARGO – Tami Dowers has joked that the secret ingredient in her baked goods is love, but the truth is that it’s really butter.

That is not to say love is not still part of the process. Dowers grew up holiday baking with her mother, and she began to view it as a way they spread love. Each holiday season they would bake no fewer than 100 dozen baked goods to share.

Dowers recently opened Sweet Haven Bakery at 1201 1st Ave. N. with the idea of sharing that love and those traditional family recipes with area residents.

Her hope is to create a “haven” where customers will grab a treat and take advantage of the bottomless cup of coffee. She is not interested in getting customers in and out as quickly as possible. She hopes they stick around and interact with each other.

“I’d like my bakery to encourage or rekindle the community, or to create a more loving community,” Dowers said.

Dowers started out selling her baked goods last summer at area farmers markets and was so pleased with how that went, she forged ahead to open her own bakery.

A number of baked goods such as caramel and cinnamon rolls, brownies, blueberry muffins and some type of wheat bread or roll are normally on hand at all times. Her menu includes dozens of other cookies, cakes, pies, muffins and breads that will be rotated in.

Dowers also welcomes special orders. Anyone with a certain craving need only wait 24 hours before she will have the desired treats available.

She is also well-versed in baking for those with dietary restrictions. She usually has something on hand to satisfy the sweet tooth of anyone with a dietary need.

A recent accomplishment was creating a lemon butter cookie recipe for a friend’s daughter who is unable to eat egg, soy, dairy or gluten.

Sweet Haven Bakery will host a grand opening celebration from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. today. Free samples and prize drawings are planned throughout the day.

Dowers said the party will really get started at 4 p.m. when Dakota Carriage Co. begins providing horse-drawn carriage rides from 4 to 6 p.m. downtown. An acoustic folk music performance from Jade and the Greenhouse will follow at 6:30 p.m.
