FARGO – A soft opening is planned from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Sunday for a taco shop in north Fargo its owners describe as “unpretentious Mexican.”

The Red Pepper, owned and operated by Jeff and Nicki Tellmann, is located at 1115 19th Ave. N. in the Happy Harry’s Plaza.

The Tellmanns already operate two Grand Forks shops, which are favorites among University of North Dakota students and residents.

“We’ve been busy training our workers,” Jeff Tellmann said Friday. “We’re asking people to come in this weekend and help us break them in.”

The Red Pepper will officially open Monday morning, with hours from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day.

“We’re unpretentious Mexican,” Tellmann said. “We don’t try to be authentic. We’re Dakota Mexican.”

The restaurant is known for its “grinders,” sandwiches made on submarine bread rolls with ham, turkey or salami, or a combination of the three, all topped with taco meat and Red Pepper’s special white sauce.

It also serves tacos and tostados.

The original Red Pepper in Grand Forks opened at 1011 University Ave. near UND. A second Red Pepper opened on the west side of the campus.

“We have a strong following in Fargo,” Tellmann said. “They asked when we were coming to Fargo. It was probably the most-asked question we got besides what’s in our white sauce.”

He said they came to Fargo, “we found a good spot and we decided to go for it. We’re excited to get going. It’s been a long time coming.”
