Thursday review: New healthier Post cereals hit and miss on flavorFARGO – Post has come out with several new cereals designed to be a healthy source of whole grains. While I don’t really eat cereal, the rest of my family does. I’m always looking for healthier options, so some of my co-workers and I agreed to try some samples of the new cereals.

While I don’t really eat cereal, the rest of my family does. I’m always looking for healthier options, so some of my co-workers and I agreed to try some samples of the new cereals.
While they may be healthier than most sugar-loaded cereals, the flavors were hit and miss.
C is for Cereal
My toddler was really excited about the C is for Cereal banana-flavored cereal I brought home for him to try (likely because it was new and it had a picture of Cookie Monster on the box).
He gobbled it up and when I asked if he liked it he said: “Yeah, I do like my cereal.”
But he wouldn’t eat it after that. I tried giving it to him the next day, and he didn’t want it. Every time I asked him if he wanted it, he said no. Finally he admitted he didn’t like it.
My 9-year-old daughter ate it, but said it tasted mostly like regular Cheerios and wouldn’t eat it after the first day either.
We now feed it to our chickens, which eat it enthusiastically.
Fellow reporter Mike Nowatzki gave the apple-flavored C is for Cereal with Elmo on the cover to his 3-year-old daughter. She ate it, but prefers her Crunch Berries, he said.
C is for Cereal, which sells for $3, provides 16 grams of whole grains per 20-gram serving. It has no artificial flavors and only 1 gram of sugar per serving.
Great Grains Protein Blend
My kids both liked the Cinnamon Hazelnut and Honey, Oats & Seeds Great Grains Protein Blend cereals.
My daughter said the Cinnamon Hazelnut cereal was “really tasty,” and she especially liked the clusters.
She also liked the pumpkin seeds in the Honey, Oats & Seeds cereal.
I thought both cereals were kind of bland and that the nuts, seeds and clusters were the best part.
Great Grains Protein Blend Cinnamon Hazelnut is made with whole grain wheat, barley, oats, hazelnuts, almonds and multigrain clusters.
It has 7 grams of fiber, 9 grams of sugar, 8 grams of protein, 5 grams of fat and 230 calories per 1-cup serving.
Great Grains Protein Blend Honey, Oats & Seeds is made with whole grain flakes, pumpkin seeds, almonds and multigrain clusters and sunflower seeds.
It has 6 grams of fiber, 8 grams of sugar, 8 grams of protein, 5 grams of fat and 220 calories per 1-cup serving.
The cereals sell for about $4 each.
Honey Bunches of Oats Greek Honey Crunch
SheSays staffer Erin Crommett and her family tried Honey Bunches of Oats Greek Honey Crunch.
While Crommett’s family ate the cereal pretty quickly, they didn’t like it as much as the regular Honey Bunches of Oats.
One son said the yogurt clusters tasted like yogurt-covered raisins. Another said he didn’t think it was that good, and he didn’t like the flavor of the yogurt clusters.
While her husband liked the flavor, he said the dried yogurt left an off-putting film in his mouth.
Crommett thought it was good, but said: “It definitely had that tang of Greek yogurt, which is kind of weird in cereal.”
Honey Bunches of Oats Greek Honey Crunch contains granola with real Greek yogurt and is made with whole grains.
It has 4 grams of fiber, 13 grams of sugar, 5 grams of protein, 3.5 grams of fat, and 230 calories per 1-cup serving.
It sells for about $4.
Grape Nuts Fit
SheSays reporter Meredith Holt tried Grape Nuts Fit and had this to say: My boyfriend loves Grape-Nuts. I do not. I had Grape-Nuts ice cream once, and I liked it ... minus the Grape-Nuts.
However, Grape-Nuts Fit, which sells for about $4, is different enough that it doesn't taste like you’re eating Grape-Nuts. Well, you are, but they’re enhanced with added ingredients like vanilla and dried cranberries.
Grape-Nuts Fit is higher-calorie than comparable cereals, but it contains 5 grams of fiber and 6 grams of protein, which I do need more of in my diet. Plus the first ingredient listed is whole grain wheat flour. It has 9 grams of sugar, 3 grams of fat and 220 calories per 2/3-cup serving.
My boyfriend loved it; I loved everything about it except the basic Grape-Nuts are still a part of the cereal. If I could, I’d eat a bowl of just the sweet crunchy clusters.
