Tuesday Tip: Teach toddlers this trick to putting on their own coats

I love my day care provider. Not only does she take wonderful care of my son, but she’s also great at sneaking little lessons into everyday play.

My 2-year-old already knows a lot of his colors, can sing most of the alphabet song (L, M, N, O, P still trip him up), and he’s starting to count.

But the lesson that has amazed me the most so far is when she taught him how to put on his coat all by himself. (He still needs help with the zipper.)

It’s not always faster than doing it myself, but it helps foster a sense of independence. He’s so proud of himself for being able to put on his own coat.

Here are the steps for doing this:

  1. Place the coat on the floor, inside facing up.

  2. Have your child stand or sit at the hood or collar of his coat and put his hands into the arm holes.

  3. Then have him lift his arms over his head and down to his sides. He should now be wearing his coat.
