MINTO, N.D. – More than 170 volunteers turned out in Minto to try to break the Guinness world record for the largest single serving of chili.

A 300-gallon milk container was dragged down Main Street on Saturday. Inside was 2,420 pounds of chili con carne.

Minto resident Chris Misialek brought the community together to break the record. A few weeks ago, the Minto Community Center called an open meeting for anyone interested in contributing to the event. Organizers were happily surprised when almost 90 people showed up.

“You’d have a hard time getting that many people to come to church!” Misialek joked.

Misialek said friends from as far away as Texas, Washington and North Carolina came to help with the event.

Funds that were raised will go to several groups, including the Sunshine Memorial Foundation, founded by Grand Forks native Donovan Larson.

Organizers estimate they have beaten the previous Guinness world record by about 1,000 pounds, but official results will not come in for several weeks.
