FARGO – Tami Blanchard Llewellyn remembers making sandwiches for the golfers with her mom at the first Roger Maris Golf Tournament 30 years ago.

Now the 45-year-old Fargo woman and her 18-year-old daughter, Paige Knain Blanchard, have been volunteering at the event side by side for more than 10 years.

“It doesn’t even seem like charity work – it’s just what we do,” Blanchard Llewellyn says.

This year, a new event will be part of the mix as a way to honor the relationships that’ve grown out of the support teams behind the behind the pars, birdies and bogeys.

“We’ve gotten to know so many people who come back year after year. They look for us and we look for them,” she says.

On Friday, the Avalon Events Center will host a Maris Friendship Celebration luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. featuring a light tasting menu.

“The Maris tournament has always had the tagline of ‘celebration of friendship,’ so we’re calling this our Maris Friendship Celebration,” says Denise Sargent, who’s on the board of directors.

Roger Maris’ widow, Pat, will host, and Amy Ruley will serve as MC of the event, which includes a small silent auction, a free photo booth and gift bags.

Sargent says the informal setup will encourage mingling and networking among the family members who help run the golf tournament.

“It really is the working women’s luncheon,” she says.

Proceeds from the Maris Friendship Celebration will benefit the Roger Maris Cancer Center, Hospice of the Red River Valley and Shanley High School.
