FARGO – Construction of a new $50 million hospital tower at Essentia Health in south Fargo kicked off this week with a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday.

The ceremony was on the south side of the hospital, where an 115,000-square-foot four-story tower will be built.

The tower is expected to be completed by Jan. 1, 2015.

The tower basement will house a kitchen to prepare patient meals, and a new dining area for visitors, employees and patients.

There will be a registration area on the first floor for both the hospital and the clinic. It’s also the location for a new emergency department and imaging suites for MRIs, CT scans and X-rays.

The second floor will house high-tech procedure rooms, including interventional radiology and endoscopy suites, and new private rooms for pre-operation and recovery.

The third floor will eventually hold a 28-bed medical/surgical unit to be added in the future as patient growth continues.

The hospital tower construction is part of a three-phase, $80 million plan at Essentia Health. Other projects in the first phase, which are already under way, include:

- Two new parking lots.

- A new 25,000-square-foot distribution and support center building

- A major renovation of Essentia’s South University Clinic, which will prompt several specialty departments to move to the building in October.
