WASHINGTON — A public health group says North Dakota has the lowest rate of drug overdose deaths in the nation.

According to the report by the Trust for America's Health, 3.4 per 100,000 people in the state died from a drug overdose in 2010.

The document says prescription drug related deaths now outnumber those from heroin and cocaine combined, and drug overdose deaths exceed motor vehicle-related deaths in 29 states and Washington, D.C.

The group says West Virginia had the highest rate of prescription deaths in 2010, 28.9 out of 100,000, and South Dakota was second, with 6.3 out of 100,000.

Deputy Director Rich Hamburg of Trust for America's Health says the group worked with other agencies to help states figure out how to deal with the problem.
