FARGO – Essentia Health is one of the nation’s first organizations to receive the highest level of accreditation as an accountable care organization.

The designation, awarded by the National Committee for Quality Assurance, is part of the Affordable Care Act drive to restrain health costs and improve quality of care.

Essentia, along with HealthPartners, received a level 3 designation, up from the level 2 designation it achieved in February.

“At Essentia Health, our mission is to make a healthy difference in people’s lives,” John Smylie, Essentia’s chief operating officer, said in a statement issued Monday. “ACO accreditation at the highest level by NCQA assures our patients, communities and insurers that Essentia holds itself to the highest standards of health care service, quality and affordability.”
