MINOT, N.D. — The state Health Department hopes to test another 230 people in the Minot area for hepatitis C in response to an outbreak that has infected 27 people.

The agency says more than 350 people associated with a nursing home already have been tested.

State epidemiologist Tracy Miller says the agency is concerned about the number people identified as carrying the strain.

She says investigators are trying to find the source of the infection to prevent more illness.

The Health Department says it has identified a group of people who may have been exposed to the virus. The department has sent letters asking them to make an appointment for a free blood test in early November.

Hepatitis C is a viral infection that can cause serious liver damage or even death.
