ABERCROMBIE, N.D. – Firefighters from a number of communities battled a blaze here Tuesday morning that heavily damaged a grain elevator.

The fire, which was reported around 6 a.m. and largely extinguished by 9:30 a.m., involved several structures, said Kevin Bernier, chief of the Abercrombie Volunteer Fire Department.

Bernier said the fire destroyed a mobile home that served as an office and the blaze also damaged the spider web of augers that directed grain to the half dozen or so steel bins making up the elevator complex, which is owned by a local farmer.

Bernier said the farmer loaded grain into one of the elevators Monday evening and left a truck at the site parked with its engine-block heater plugged in.

He said the cause of the blaze was under investigation, but added that in such situations overheated bearings in the grain transfer machinery is a common source of fires.

Bernier said no one was injured in the fire, which got a jump on firefighters due to the fact that the department’s pager system used a radio antenna that was attached to the elevator’s auger system.

In lieu of pagers, firefighters had to be alerted by phone calls.

Mike Ludvigson, who manages the Abercrombie Store in downtown Abercrombie, said that with all of the emergency vehicles in town he scene looked like Christmas early Tuesday.

“Lots of lights,” Ludvigson said.

Abercrombie is about 30 miles south of Fargo in Richland County.
