Make-at-home Red Lobster biscuit mix pretty close to the real thing

FARGO – Any Endless Shrimp veteran knows not to fill up on Red Lobster’s Cheddar Bay Biscuits before the crustacean consumption begins.

But it’s hard to resist their delicious buttery-flaky-herby-garlicness.

The biscuits are so popular they have their own Facebook fan page, and “copycat restaurant recipe” blogs and cookbooks have tried to duplicate them, with mixed results.

On a recent grocery shopping trip to the 55th Avenue South Walmart, I spotted a new mix from Red Lobster itself. The company has apparently decided to further capitalize on its biscuits’ fandom by offering a make-them-yourself version.

All the mix requires is water, butter and grated or shredded cheddar cheese. The biscuits were quick and easy to make and turned out great.

The restaurant biscuits are so greasy they leave butter stains on the napkins they come wrapped in; the make-at-home ones were lighter and less greasy.

Bottom line: The mix’s biscuits are pretty close to the real thing; some may prefer them.
