As you start your training for the upcoming Fargo Marathon take the time to think about what you’re wearing. It’s not so much a question of style but function. Today’s running clothing is designed to protect and help you train more effectively and efficiently.

In Part 3 of Getting in Gear with Josh and Erin, Fargo Marathon Executive Director Mark Knutson goes shopping with our runners, Josh Thomas and Erin Mayer. He says the proper clothing can make all the difference in the world. Here are his top clothing tips:

1. If you plan to run outside this winter, layering is key. You should start with a base layer that is tight fitting.

2. If it’s under 10 or 20 degrees you should wear a mid-layer piece over the base layer and under your jacket for further thermal insulation.

3. Regardless of the weather, your outermost layer should be wind blocking, reflective and water resistant.

3. Don’t be brand blind. Don’t get locked into selecting one brand. Most brands found in running stores are good. Pick the one you like the most.

4. Consider running tights. Even if you’ve never worn them before, don’t rule them out. They can be warmer and more protective than pants and can even help circulation.
