I agree with Eric. I know several food pantry recipients. They never go without beer and cigarettes, have money to spend in the bar, and have cell phones that do everything for them but wipe their bottoms. While I do know there are families out there who need these services, there should be more of a screening process. If you can afford a $200 a month cell phone, they you should be able to afford food!

How is it "still better here" if the plentiful jobs (4% unemployment) don't pay the bills? I really hope this turns around after this Great Recession ends, because if it doesn't...

MediumRare...as always, such constructive and helpful insight. Face it. The economy is down, but not nearly as bad here as other areas. Prove me wrong by moving someplace else and giving constant negative feedback on everything elsewhere.

We have always had underemployment in Pleasantville.Heating costs every winter can challenge the food budget.Minnesota is now teaching school children how to cook and eat nutritious food.Maybe we should extend that knowledge to families.Don't assume my comment is a put-down.There is always new knowledge to gain about cooking and nutrition.Finding healthy, good tasting meals on a budget can be an adventure.Buying pre-cooked items is a way to spend too much at the grocery store.
