North Dakota’s use of ‘Sakakawea’ not supported by historical record

When I was in grade school in Valley City, N.D., in the 1960s, the history and civics textbooks used the name “Sacajawea,” as did the teachers. At about that time, Garrison Reservoir was renamed “Lake Sakakawea.” I recall an explanation from supposedly knowledgeable people that “Sakakawea” was the real name of Lewis and Clark’s guide. It took some time to get used to the new name.
