Jerry was born in Minot N.D. where he attended school and married Violet Melhus on June 21, 1942. He joined the Navy and served in the South Pacific returning to North Dakota and Minnesota where they spent the next 59 years together raising six children. He was an avid golfer, curler, hunter/fisherman and also enjoyed a good game of poker.
