CMDR Marion B. Haire

The first child of Jerome and Frances Haire, Marion was born in Wilkin County, Minnesota, grew up, and attended school there. After high school, she entered the St. Francis School of Nursing in Breckenridge, MN, from which she graduated and was licensed as a Registered Nurse in 1939. After working briefly in Fergus Falls, MN, she moved to Milwaukee, WI, where she was employed at St. Anthony Hospital.

In 1943, Marion was commissioned to serve in the Navy Nurse Corps. Her first duty station was USNH Seattle, WA, and from there she was sent to a dispensary at Shoemaker, CA. In 1946, she returned to civilian life in Milwaukee, attending Marquette University, where she earned a B.S. in Public Health Nursing. In 1950, with the start of the Korean War, Marion was recalled to active duty, serving for 21 months aboard the hospital ship, USS Consolation. Thereafter, her duty stations were: USNH Pensacola, FL, USNH Beaufort SC, Hospital Corps School, Bainbridge MD, Hospital Corps School, San Diego, USNH Oakland CA, Hospital Corps School, Portsmouth, VA. Marion rose through the ranks to become a Commander and completed her Navy career with duty at USNH Guam, retiring in 1969. She returned to Oakland, CA, living there with her sister, Jane, until 1998, when they moved to the retirement community of Paradise Valley Estates, in Fairfield, CA.
